Approximately one in 14 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Dr Wendy Shu, Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, recommends that women over 20 should conduct regular self-exams and undergo professional screenings at least every two years. The three steps of breast cancer screening include: Clinical Examination: Women should perform monthly self-exams after each period, where the breast tissue is least swollen. If abnormalities are found, such as enlarging lumps around bumps, a clinical consultation is necessary to assess risk factors and further consultation tests. Mammography is essential for breast cancer screening. For lumps deep in the breast or those that are too small, it may be difficult to determine whether a lump is benign or malignant through palpation. Key imaging options include ultrasound for younger women with dense tissue; 2D mammography for detecting small or undeveloped tumours; and 3D mammography for enhanced accuracy. Additionally, breast MRI is valuable for high-risk individuals, providing a comprehensive assessment of breast health.
