Christmas is a time for giving. This year, staff from GHK extend their festive blessings to sick children and their families in collaboration with the Children's Palliative Care Foundation under the Children's Cancer Foundation. A group of GHK colleagues served as "Secret Santas" to prepare Christmas gifts according to the wish list of children suffering from life-threatening diseases. The gifts were made personalised with hand-written personal messages from our volunteers.

The Community's health is always at Gleneagles' top priority

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections have continued to emerge in various countries such as the United States and mainland China in recent years, and Hong Kong is also approaching the peak season for RSV. RSV symptoms are similar to those of influenza, with fever, runny nose, cough, and headache, etc. RSV may cause infections in the trachea, lungs, and middle ear, but patients can only be treated with supportive treatment to alleviate the symptoms. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people get vaccinated with the newly introduced RSV vaccine, which is available to people aged 60 or above, as well as elderly individuals with chronic condition.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) anticipates that the activity level of coronavirus disease will continue to rise during the winter season. From the surveillance data (as of 6 December 2023), XBB and its descendant lineages remain the most common variant, with EG.5.1 and BA.2.86 also being part of the variants. Government experts strongly recommend individuals, especially those at high risk, to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as early as possible to cope with the potential simultaneous occurrence of COVID-19 and influenza peaks.

As members of the Gleneagles integrated network, Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong is fully committed to protecting the community's health which offers the latest RSV Vaccine and BioNTech Comirnaty XBB Vaccine build a protective barrier for the public.

Comprehensive protection against influenza and pneumonia

Winter is always the peak season of influenza. Patients with seasonal influenza are more susceptible to community-acquired pneumonia. Community-acquired pneumonia refers to the lung infection that occurs outside healthcare settings and can be caused by bacteria (such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae) or respiratory viruses.

As the protection period of influenza vaccine only lasts for six to eight months and the influenza virus changes rapidly, members of the public are recommended to get vaccinated every year, suggested Dr Wan Chi-kin, Co-Director of Lung Cancer Centre and Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong.

Secondary bacterial pneumonia is a significant cause of illness and death in influenza patients. A local study shows that dual influenza and pneumococcal vaccination can reduce the risk of hospitalisation and mortality among the elderly. Pneumococcal vaccines are classified into pneumococcal conjugate vaccines and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines. A study shows that the newly launched 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has greater effectiveness against serotype 3, which is the most difficult to protect against, said Dr Sham Chak-on Philip, Specialist in Paediatrics at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong.
