2 Feb 1943, Chronology of Events Related to Stanley Civilian Internment Camp Posted: 23 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST Book / Document: Date(s) of events described: Tue, 2 Feb 1943 What remains of the German Sixth Army surrrenders at Stalingrad. About 91,000 Axis troops are taken prisoner. About six months of brutal fighting have cost the Russions 750,000 casualties - killed, captured or wounded - in the city itself; the number of civilians killed in the surrounding areas is unknown. If the battle had been lost, even if the Germans had eventually been defeated, few internees would have lived long enough to see the end of the war. There's a long way to go, even on the Russian front, but today is one of the days that assures the survival of most of Stanley Camp. |
