Chinese Medicine for Emotional Disorders: Effective Ways to Soothe Emotions

In modern society, the impact of emotional disorders is becoming increasingly evident. Registered Chinese Medicine practitioner (RCMP) Lam Chi-Lan, who works at Gleneagles Healthcare, points out the root causes of emotional issues often relate to internal organ: the liver. According to Chinese Medicine theory, the liver needs blood for nourishment. If the liver blood is insufficient, the liver becomes overly strong and sensitive to stress, causing stagnant liver qi (肝氣). The five elements theory, states that "liver (wood) exploiting spleen (earth)" (also known as 「肝木克脾土」in Chinese), meaning a stronger liver status can weaken the spleen's qi (脾氣). If qi and blood generation remains low, liver blood deficiency worsens, creating a vicious cycle that increases the risk of depression. Thus, it is essential to nourish the blood to keep the liver flexible. A healthy liver helps to enhance qi (氣) and promote emotional well-being.

According to RCMP Lam, there are many causes for emotional disorders, include liver qi stagnation and kidney deficiency.  These can be identified through symptoms such as loss of appetite and heightened sensitivity to stress.  She also noted that in the high-pressure environment of city life, many people experience symptoms such as cold hands and feet, which are not due to insufficiency of qi and blood (氣血不足), but rather from tension and qi stagnation that obstructs blood circulation in the extremities. To alleviate these conditions, RCMP Lam recommends drinking warm herbal teas, such as rose tea, to promote circulation.

In terms of treatment, acupuncture is one effective option. For instance, abdominal acupuncture can help adjust overall qi and blood, while acupuncture on specific points, such as San Yin Jiao (三陰交) and Nei Guan (內關) can aid regulating the nervous system and enhancing serotonin secretion, helping to alleviate emotions. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial; it is advisable to avoid excessive intake of foods that can lead to digestive issues, as well as overly greasy and spicy foods to prevent in worsening globus hystericus (梅核氣), which is a symptom in exacerbating phlegm and qi obstruction, also the symptoms of  an excess of heat caused by a deficiency in Yin (陰虛火旺). It is recommended to choose snacks that nourish the heart and spleen, such as longan, and cinnamon powder paired with apples to improve mood.

To prevent emotional disorders, it is recommended to express emotions appropriately, such as talking with family and friends. Regularly monitoring one's sleep quality and social interactions is also essential. Maintaining good sleep and an active social life can lower the risk of emotional disorders.
