New Trends in Diabetes Treatment: New Antidiabetic Medications Provide Enhanced Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Protection

Diabetes patients who also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and leading to various complications, such as coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, stroke and kidney failure, etc. Dr Ng Kei-yan Andrew, Consultant in Cardiology at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, points out that diabetes patients have up to three times higher risk of cardiovascular diseases compared to healthy person asthey are more likely to have their blood vessels narrowed and blocked. If patients fail to manage their condition properly, there is an increased risk of failure in various organs and even an increased mortality risk.

New Treatment Approach: From "Blood Sugar Control" to "Organ Protection"

Previously, Dr Ng and a team of specialists conducted a joint study to compare the effectiveness of diabetes medications, analysing data from more than 20,000 diabetes patients with an average age of 59, comparing the three-year efficacy of intaking the new type of antidiabetic medicine "SGLT-2 inhibitors" versus "DPP-4 inhibitors". The results showed that, compared to "DPP-4 inhibitors", "SGLT-2 inhibitors" are more effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in diabetic patients. By eliminating glucose and salt through urine, "SGLT-2 inhibitors" reduce the risk of related diseases, such as kidney failure, etc.

Treatment and Daily Management

Beyond medication, patients should monitor blood sugar regularly, maintain a balance diet, do exercise regularly and undergo annual electrocardiograms. High-risk individuals may require further assessments according to doctor's advice, such as heart CT scan, ultrasound, treadmill test, etc. If you have any concerns about your condition, please seek medical advice as soon as possible. Patients should discuss the most suitable personalised treatment option with their doctors.
