Controlling Bad Cholesterol: The Key to Preventing Heart Disease Recurrence

Angioplasty (commonly known as "balloon surgery is an effective way to quickly restore blood flow by clearing blocked arteries. However, it is not a permanent fix. If low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol remains elevated, the risk of re-blockage and heart disease recurrence remains high.

Dr Tse Tak-sun, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization & Interventional Centre and Honorary Consultant in Cardiology at Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, emphasises that managing LDL cholesterol is key to preventing heart disease recurrence. According to the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines, patients who have undergone angioplasty should maintain their LDL cholesterol levels below 1.4 mmol/L, and reduce it by at least 50% from the original level. Recent studies have shown that combining PCSK9 inhibitors with oral cholesterol-lowering medications can further reduce bad cholesterol by 43% to 60%, helping to stabilise the condition and lower the risk of recurrence.

Dr Tse also recommends that patients regularly monitor their cholesterol levels, maintain an ideal body weight, and follow a balanced diet. This includes adopting a low-salt, low-sugar, and low-saturated-fat eating pattern to promote cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of disease recurrence. If the patient has already taken the maximum tolerated dose of oral cholesterol-lowering medication and cholesterol levels still do not meet the target, it is recommended that the patient discuss the needs of using of injectable cholesterol medication with their doctor to further manage the condition.
