New Hope for Liver Cancer Patients - "Reduce and Remove"
Tri-modality Therapy
The emergence of the new "Reduce and Remove" Tri-modality Therapy has brought new hope to intermediate stage liver cancer patients who were previously unable to undergo surgery. A recent clinical study on the therapy* shows that some of the patients with inoperable liver cancer can become suitable for curative surgery after a reduction of the tumour size achieved via the tri-modality approach. This less invasive treatment also allows less hospitalisation time, fewer side effects, and hence less discomfort for patients.

*The results of the clinical study has been published in The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Latest treatment on knee degeneration

Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disease, mainly due to aging, degeneration and injury. Patients usually do not feel obvious pain during the early stage of osteoarthritis, but they may feel pain during exercise. When arthritis gets worse, patients may suffer from pain that affects their daily life. Their mobility may also be affected when the joints become deformed and stiff. If patients suffer from joint pain that hinders their daily life, they should consider surgery as a treatment option, suggested by Dr Cheung Man-hong Steve, Clinical Assistant Professor of Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine at The University of Hong Kong and Gleneagles' Specialist in Orthopaedics & Traumatology.

Knee replacement surgery is generally catagorised into two types: full or partial knee replacement, both surgeries are well established. Dr Cheung mentioned that the number of patients which adopt partial knee replacement has been increased in recent years. Partial knee replacement surgery replaces the parts of injured or worn-out knee joints while keeping the normal part of cruciate ligament and meniscus. The surgery is less invasive and allows shorter recovery time. In recent years, robotic arms have also been used to assist in joint replacement surgeries, further improving the surgical accuracy.
