Hello Listener,

Ever heard of Goroawase (語呂合わせ)? It’s Japanese wordplay based on numbers.

Every Japanese number can have several readings, including English readings. So when you combine certain numbers, you can create words or phrases. For example...
  • 39 is san and kyuu, and it’s read as sankyuu or “thank you”
  • 5572 is ko-ko-na-tsu (tsu for two), so it becomes “coconut”
This is a popular mnemonic technique that is also used for Japanese dates. Most learners don’t get to hear about this, but you’ll find out even more Goroawase wordplay in this Free Japanese Wordplay List from JapanesePod101!

It’ll only take a minute and you’ll come out knowing more Japanese!
